Quote, A slothful, unsavoury, nasty reversal of the laws of human mature, said the Traveller; and for the sake of GOD'S working world and its wholesomeness, both moral and physical, I would put the thing on the treadmill (if I had my way) wherever I found it; whether on a pillar, or in a hole; whether on Tom Tiddler's ground, or the Pope of Rome's ground, or a Hindoo fakeer's ground, or any other ground.

Quote, March 23, 1819, Karl-Ludwig Sand murdered August von Kotzebue, a playwright in the service of the Russian government, because of his criticism of the student associations and their nationalist yearnings. The idealization of Sand, who was beheaded in 1820, shows just how widespread the disaffection with the reactionary Metternich System was. Fragments of his scaffold were venerated like relics, lithographs depicting the stations of his life and numerous portraits expressed utter repudiation of the German Confederation's policies of repression.

Quote, But now, all at once, Servigny, by a few words, the brutality of which she felt without understanding them, awakened in her a sudden disquietude, unreasoning at first, but which grew into a tormenting apprehension. She had fled home, had escaped like a wounded animal, wounded in fact most deeply by those words which she ceaselessly repeated to get all their sense and bearing: You know very well that there can be no question of marriage between us--but only of love.

Quote, Jacobus having put me in mind of his wealthy brother I concluded I would pay that business call at once. I had by that time heard a little more of him. He was a member of the Council, where he made himself objectionable to the authorities. He exercised a considerable influence on public opinion. Lots of people owed him money.
